Sweet, Sweet Victory

By Joshua Mechling

What a difference a year makes!

The Cowboys headed into the final game of the season against archrival Briggs with a chance to capture a rare winning-season.

After starting out with a 0–12 deficit and struggling to get anything going on offense, hopes for a winning season looked grim for the Cowboys. Memories of last year’s blowout were flooding back into the minds of the fans and players. Fortunately, the Cowboys were able to overcome their misfortunes and find the end zone for six points with just 0.1 seconds left in the first half, capping off a 99-yard drive.

Heading into half time with the score sitting at 6–12 in favor of Briggs, heads remained up. Everyone was now optimistic about the Cowboys chances of pulling off a victory.

Yet again, all seemed lost late into the third quarter as Briggs scored a touchdown to put the score at 6–18. The Cowboys fought back with another touchdown drive, closing the score to 12–18. “Well, at first, I thought we were in trouble, but after we scored again, I knew that we still had a chance,” said senior quarterback Eric Stewart.

The Cowboys never looked back. With all of the momentum, the Cowboys scored another touchdown and made their first extra-point of the game. The score now held firm at 19–18. West was able to score again with just about two minutes left to go in the fourth quarter to make the final score 25–18.

“I knew that we were too good to lose to them,” said Stewart.

“They’ll remember this game for the rest of their lives,” said Paul Mechling, father of senior left guard Joshua Mechling.

Victory is so much sweeter when it’s against your rival who embarrassed you at your own stadium the year before.

Preparing for their first offensive play of the game, quarterback Eric Stewart (far left) checks down to make sure everyone was set in formation. The team was ready to take control of this game, on their way to a 2-1 record.

Approaching the snap of the ball, the team gets down into position. The team looked great and like they knew what they were doing all night long.

Talking with the defense, are Coach Baldwin (far left), Coach McClelland (middle), and Coach Hall (far right). The coaches did a fantastic job with the team, leading them to a huge victory.
