Making a Difference

By Katrina Daniel

Another year at West High school underway which means another year of hard work for the members of the student council.  Ever wonder who put those decorations up for the big dance?  Or who made your candy gram? Underneath the fun of homecoming dances, food or blood drives, and teacher of the month is a group of hard working students making it happen.

Student council is made up of five senior advisors along with five other seniors, six juniors, eight sophomores, and four freshman.  Students have the opportunity to apply in their freshman year. The application consists of an essay question asking why you would make a great member, fifty signatures from peers, and three teacher recommendations.  When asked if she would recommend others to join student council, senior advisor Crystal Sangsanoy said, “Of course, First off student council needs more help and it opens opportunities for student to get involved and find out what’s going on around their school.”

Homecoming really starts the year for student council senior advisor Kirsten Edwards said “ I look forward to homecoming most. It’s a fun, busy time in student council.” When you see the parade and the nice convertibles carrying the top five homecoming candidates, and the homemade student floats many don’t realize how difficult putting it all together is. All of the cars featured in the parade are donated from car dealerships, President Katrina Daniel and Advisor Mr. Bartels had to visit six different car dealerships just to find five convertibles.

Student council always hosts the annual Red Cross blood drive. This year they took on a big task in hosting three blood drives competing against Briggs High for most pints.  Member Hayden Thornton said “ Its great to see all of the students helping to save lives.” Each member takes turns volunteering his or her class time to help out with the blood drive. Currently Briggs High leads the race in pints, but with one blood drive to go the cowboys still have a chance.

There is no doubt that being involved at your school can make a great difference, though it may mean a lot or work it always seems worth it to the members of student council.
