Nikki Little gets the ball, dribbles quickly down the court, shakes a defender to the right, moves left, shakes off two more defenders and goes up for a 15-foot jump shot. SWOOSH! Good for two points! The small but talented player Nikki Little at only 5’2 has been a scoring machine for West High. Little as West’s leading scorer as shown a great deal of athleticism this season. She is averaging 26 points a game and players are happy to have Nikki on their team. “I’m happy for Nikki. I’m glad to have her as a teammate and friend,” said junior Kara Brigner. The girls basketball team is a small team with their tallest player standing at only 5’8. Being short has disadvantages because it’s harder to shoot, pass and score points against teams. Senior Airiel Fields said, “It’s very difficult because I am only 5’6 and I know I’m not taller than most other teams. I remember playing East High they had a girl that was 6’4, that’s like a foot taller than me.” Junior Kara Brigner said, “We are small but mighty.” Despite their smallness the team has won more games this season. One way the team has overcome their height disadvantage is through hard practices to win more games this season. “Mr. Duffner has been working more on drills and working us harder,” said junior Tara Brigner. The players worked very hard to improve their shots, dribbling, passing and ball control. As Airiel Fields said, “Practice, Practice, and Practice!” |
