2008-2009 West High Cheerleaders

Cheerleading is a time consuming sport. The cheerleaders here at West High School practice three times a week, and are ten very enthusiastic individuals. “We may make it look easy, but like all sports it takes hard work and dedication,” quoted Author Shawna Fox from About.com. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, practices runs 3:15- 4:45, and then on Wednesday, practice lasts an hour, starting at 3:15 also. This year’s supreme goal is to focus on community service, increase overall school spirit within the student body, and have an overall better squad in terms of mechanics.

Mr. Harrelson is the cheerleading coach. He has been part of the West High Staff for four years, and has been coaching a total of three. He got his undergraduate degree from Ohio Dominican University, and his Masters degree from Ohio State. On the squad he uses respect, and good representation to motivate the girls. He feels that their biggest weakness is their communication, but their biggest strength is their high spirits. We specifically asked Coach Harrelson if he could describe cheerleading in one word, what it would be, and he comically answered “Drama.”
Cheerleaders make signs, and perform at the pep rallies. They practice strong leadership skills, extra school spirit, and good academics. Be sure and check out our West High Cheerleaders at one of our football, or basketball games. You won’t be disappointed!
