West High School Attendance Policy

SIX TO BE SICK

Students will be allowed a maximum of six days absence in a nine week grading period unless one of the below absence verifications is presented. The following is a list of what is considered an absence that will not count against the six maximum absences.
  1. Personal or family health care/illness, verified by a doctor or dentist, for each day of absence
  2. Death of a relative (up to three days absence are routinely approved
  3. Observance of religious holiday (advanced notice is required, please submit a Request for Excused Absence Form)
  4. Family emergency (reason must be stated for review by the Attendance Committee). It will be to the committee's discretion whether to count or not count the absence towards the six maximum absences
  5. Becoming ill, while at school, as approved by the school nurse or her designee
  6. Weather conditions excused by the school district

Vacation, College Visitations, and Take Your Child to Work Day are highly discouraged during the school year. An absence due to these reasons must be requested in advance in order not to be counted towards the six maximum absences. These will be reviewed by the Attendance Committee and accepted or rejected. If approved, proof of college visitations and take your child to work will be required. To obtain a Request for Excused Absence form, contact the attendance office at 365-5959.

Attendance Committee - a committee consisting of Administrator, School Nurse, Teachers, Attendance Secretary, Student(s), and Parent or Community Volunteer, who will review absences and all Requests for Excused Absence.

Appeals to the Attendance Committee-any parent/guardian who wishes to appeal an absence to the Attendance Committee must do so no later than two weeks after the nine week grading period ends. To appeal, they must complete an Appeal Form available in the Attendance Office. The parent/guardian and student must attend the Appeal Meeting.

Tardiness to School-Any student arriving during the first and second periods will be considered tardy. Tardies will follow the same guidelines as absences for what is counted and not counted.Students having three and five unexcused tardies will be assigned after school detentions respectively. Students with seven or more unexcused tardies may be removed pending a parent conference.

ALL STUDENTS, REGARDLESS OF AGE, MUST FOLLOW THIS ATTENDANCE POLICY
